Goal: To provide medical assistance to help the uninsured and under-insured population surrounding the two mile radius surrounding the Wellness Center in West Las Vegas, Nevada..
Objectives: Provide general health checkups and physicals for the under-served population. Compile a network of specialists. Provide all services for free.
Description: The Al Maun (Neighborly Needs) Wellness Center was established on February 10, 2007. It is open every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 10am-2pm. Everyone involved with the Wellness Center is a volunteer. The majority of the office and medical equipment in the Wellness Center was donated by local physicians and medical offices. The Wellness Center is located on the premises of Masjid as-Sabur.
Accomplishments: Since its establishment in 2007, the Wellness Center has helped over 400 patients. About half of the patients seen are repeat patients. Fifteen physicians volunteer regularly at the Wellness Center. Sixteen specialists are part of the "specialist network" that see patients at their own offices for free. About ten nurses also volunteer regularly. Two social workers and a dietitian have helped out in the past as well.
Future Plans: The Wellness Center was originally envisioned to expand in phases. The next phase would lead the Wellness Center to move to a more permanent location with adequate restroom and running water facilities. Malpractice insurance to cover the facility and the medical professionals involved. A more advanced and safer storing and file tracking system will be implemented. Proper licensing for more detailed procedures will be needed i.e. flu shots etc. Subsidizing and negotiating low cost lab and x-ray deals with local providers for the patients. All of these improvements will require more funding. The estimated costs of all these improvements will easily double the current annual expenses to about $36,000. But it is a direly needed service for one of the most financially depressed communities in the greater Las Vegas Valley.
The Wellness Center is temporarily closed until further notice.
